A National Movement Begins

The National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC) was established in Oakland, California, in response to the growing need for equal opportunities, fair representation, and economic inclusion for minority contractors within the construction industry. NAMC was founded to address systemic barriers that limited access to contracts, capital, and industry participation for minority-owned construction businesses.

Advocacy & Industry Representation

Throughout the 1970s, NAMC became a leading voice advocating for minority participation in public and private construction projects across the United States. The organization worked to influence procurement policies, support affirmative action initiatives, and create pathways for minority contractors to compete more equitably in the industry.

1980s

Expansion & Business Development

As the construction industry evolved, NAMC expanded its focus to include contractor education, business development, mentorship, and workforce readiness. Chapters across the country strengthened relationships with government agencies, developers, and major construction firms to increase supplier diversity participation.

Building Strategic Partnerships

NAMC continued building partnerships with public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations to help minority contractors gain greater access to large-scale infrastructure and development projects. The organization also increased efforts around certification support, training programs, and procurement readiness.

Strengthening Minority Contractor Capacity

During the early 2000s, NAMC chapters expanded professional development initiatives focused on operational growth, leadership development, compliance education, and business sustainability. The organization remained committed to empowering minority-owned businesses through advocacy and strategic networking opportunities.

Formation of NAMC DMV

The NAMC DMV Chapter was established to serve minority contractors throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region. The chapter was created to address the unique needs of contractors operating within one of the nation’s most competitive and rapidly growing construction markets.

Today — Advancing Opportunity & Inclusion

Today, NAMC DMV serves as a trusted resource and industry advocate for minority contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and construction professionals throughout the region. The chapter works collaboratively with corporate partners, public agencies, developers, and community leaders to promote equitable participation and economic empowerment within the construction industry.

Through education, collaboration, advocacy, and strategic engagement, NAMC DMV continues to help build stronger businesses, stronger partnerships, and stronger communities.
